SplashFits hit the 1000 Steps on 17-6-12!

We had a great mix of new and experienced 12WBTers that are part of the SplashFits Facebook Group walk the 1000 Steps in Ferntree Gully in Victoria this morning.  http://www.dandenongrangesattractions.com.au/attractions/1000-steps/

The weather leading up to the event was miserable and raining.  I really thought I would need to cancel the event for safety reasons.  Early this morning the radar was telling me the rain had passed so the event was on!  Off to the Steps we Go!

Here we are at the bottom of the steps with smiles on our faces but some had doubts about whether they can make it to the top...

Are we there yet??  This is taking forever but we are pretending to enjoy it!
Woohoo!  The first 4 SplashFits are at the top!
And two more SplashFits join us a couple of minutes later!
We did it!  But where is Annie and Abbie...?
Annie and her personal cheer leader walked up and down the steps twice!

Up and down the 1000 Steps and our heart rate monitors prove we worked hard.

Today was a great experience for all of us.  Half of us had never walked the steps before and doubted our ability to complete it.  But when you get your mind in the right place, decide to give it a go and have the support of your team mates, the achievable becomes smashable!  And the scenery was absolutely gorgeous.

Afterwards we all enjoyed a social chat in the local cafe.  We debriefed on the ups and downs of our week, and shared experiences to help each other as we move forward.  Well done SplashFits!  We'll be doing it again in a fortnight.

They participated in a total of 4 hours of group exercise classes to launch the new Les Mills releases...
yes 4 HOURS!!!  They were on a mission to burn calories and WOW they pushed their bodies to the limits.

I joined them for 90 minutes of Pump, Step and RPM.
A quick video update at the 2 hour mark...

How many calories did these two machines burn in 4 hours??
An outstanding combined total of 4374 calories!

How do you recover from such an exhausting morning of exercise?
They have definitely earnt their Sunday rest day.
Congratulations ladies.
I know Mish would be so proud of the two of you.
I certainly am!

Mentoring - Introducing PrincessErin02

Hi everyone,

I'm giving mentoring a go this round to pay it forward to a couple of newbies.  I met them through my SplashFits Facebook group and we all train at the same leisure facility.

In this video I introduce you to PrincessErin02 and explain how I will mentor her.  I call her Mini Mish 2.  I will post update videos of her journey throughout Round 2 so you can follow her and see how we get her to smash her goals.

I will soon introduce you to Rednalexa and you can follow her journey too!  She's Mini Mish 1 :)

I hope you are going to love these girls as much as I do. They both have a streak of Splash in them... Squee!

Eating Out Tips

Splash's Top 10 Tips for Eating Out

When I have planned to eat out, I exercise 1000 cals that morning, I eat up to 600 cals only during the day (usually 3 small meals of 200 cals) so that I have 600 cals free for dinner incase the food is oily or if I eat a bit more than I should or if I taste someone else's dessert, etc...  And I always have a glass of water to sip - it was just handy.

I found eating out became more about the social aspect than the food and that was really really cool for me.  I engage in conversations more now rather than think of and eat 3 courses of fatty sweet food all night.

The important thing is PLAN if you CAN :). So, the steps I follow when eating out are:

1 - Get a copy of the menu beforehand.

2 - Order one meal rather than three courses.

3 - Avoid the rices and pastas as the serves will be way too big and it's hard to only eat 1/3 of the meal without people questioning you.

4 - Look for grilled options as they may be a good choice.

5 - Ask for dressing or sauce on the side so you can just taste it rather than eat it all.

6 - I usually choose (in this order preference)
A - a salad with dressing on the side
B - an entre as my main meal
C - grilled fish, chicken or meat

7 - A salad can be be boring though so make sure you don't feel left out if you order salad.  Order a fancy one with salmon or chicken or octopus (if you like those things and they are not fried).

8 - If you choose a meat dish, make sure it's not crumbed or fried or drenched in sauce. A grilled one is a better choice.  Ask for sauce on the side if you can and just dip the meat in it a couple of times to taste it then don't eat the rest. Look for steamed veggies too in these meals.

9 - Portion size is important.  You'll be realizing the 12WBT portion size is small when you cook the meals at home so eat similar quantities of protein, veggies/salad when you eat out.

10 - Dessert time!  Ummm enjoy a cup of tea (and just taste a teaspoon of someone else's if you really really need to).  I never ate sweets during my weight loss phase, not even on my birthday - I was on a mission and NOTHING was going to tempt me.

Let me know if this helps you by leaving a comment below, or share your tips below too!

1000 Steps & I felt Normal

A new friend of mine and former 12WBT member, Hayley, invited me along to walk the 1000 Steps in Ferntree Gully with her and some of her training friends.  I had only known this person through the 12WBT program for a short period of time and met her about 9 days ago.  She was lovely and I was honoured to be invited so I happily accepted the invite.  I was excited to do something new.

I had never walked the 1000 steps before so the day before I was actually a little worried.  There is no way I would chicken out and not attend as i really appreciated the invite.  But what if I am not fit enough to make it to the top?  What if they are all so much fitter than me? What if I overheat? What if I slip over? What if my legs hurt too much from doing Step and Pump classes yesterday? What if what if what if??  I decided to take a chill pill, turn up and just go with the flow.

I arrived and found Hayley and her friends. Everyone was lovely and the air was fresh... ummm VERY FRESH!  I definitely could have done with an extra jacket in the beginning.  We set off at our own pace and it was a great chance to get to know people and have a chat.  I wasn't the only one doing the walk for the first time so that made me feel better too.

Walking walking walking and still no sign of any actaully "steps".  I began to think there aren't any real steps, it's just a long curvy path up a mountain.  Then boom I saw steps... after walking 800m to get to them!  Oh boy, this was not going to be easy.

The ground was a bit wet but it wasn't raining.  The huge green trees all around me made me feel tiny, the sound of water running was so nice and soothing.  I absolutely loved it!  It's something my Mum would love so i will definitely take her during the summer months when there is no chance of slipping.

We walked up, felt like we had achieved something then walked down.. Some people did the walk more than once but once was enough for me today.  we were greeted at the bottom by a delicious BBQ breakfast that Hayley & Adam hosted for us.  We socialised and i got to know Hayley's friends a bit better.

This morning I felt really normal.  Usually I either train solo or with the SplashFits.  When I train with the SpalshFits we all talk about the 12WBT program and we support eachother and share experiences.  When I train solo, the people in the gym that are strangers to me have seen that I have lost lots of weight.

But this morning I met a new bunch of people.  And even though we exercised together, the morning didn't revolve around 12WBT and our transformations.  I was just a normal person training with other normal people, talking about work and study and having breakfast.  I felt really normal.  All I want is to feel normal and this morning was probably my first real experience of that.  We touched on the 12WBT program but the conversation did not revolve around me.  That was really really nice... and I felt normal :)

Here's a short video and a couple of pics.

I will definitely organise a 1000 Steps event for the SpalshFits as it feels REALLY good once you make it to the top!

Ski Chic Special

This is a variation of a recipe my sister (Ski Chic on 12WBT) came up with.  I'm not really sure what you call it so I've named it Ski Chic Special.  Eat it by itself, with a piece of grilled chicken or mix through 1/2 cup of pasta. Yum!
3 x 400g cans of Diced Tomatoes
500g Eggplant diced
3 medium carrots sliced
A selecetion of your favourite herbs and spices (I used Garlic and Herb Salt)

Pour tinned tomatoes, diced eggplant and sliced carrots into a saucepan.
Place on a medium to low heat with the lid on for about 25 minutes, stiring every 5 minutes to ensure the vegetables dont stick to the bottom of the pan.
Add herbs or seasoning and stir through.
Cook for a further 10 minutes or until the carrots are cooked to your liking.

Makes 5 serves
100 calories per serve
Suitable to freeze

Apple Oat Muffins

Apple Oat Muffins

I just made up the recipe tonight after reading some protein bar recipes!

200g Quick Oats
1 1/2 stewed apples (really sweet ones)
1 teaspoon cinamon
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
175g Yoplait ForMe Vanilla yoghurt

Mix all together well in a food processor.
Place patty pans into a muffin tin, or spray a muffin tin with oil spray.
Spoon mixture evenly to make 9 muffins.
Cook in 200 degree oven for 12 - 15 minutes or until cooked through.

Makes 9 muffins at 138 cals each.

Alternative:
Also add 1/2 cup vanilla protein powder to the mixture and adjust the calories.
Keep an eye on them in the oven if you add protein powder as they can burn easily.

How to Connect With Splash

Here's a little video of what I have planned for 12WBT Round 2 2012... and it's all about YOU!

SplashFit

I have created a Facebook Group for Victorian Northern Suburbs 12WBTers where I will organise discounted casual training sessions at the Thomastown Recreation & Aquatic Centre (TRAC) and other fun events/services throughout Round 20 2012.

Request to join the group if you genuinely want to attend some of the training sessions and form a support crew within the group.

We had 11 people attend a Sweat & Socialise session on 27 May and WOW did we sweat in that BodyStep class!
Then 7 of us attended Pump on 3 June and discovered muscles we never knew existed!

Looking forward to sweating and socialising with you to a better lifestyle.

1st DEXA Scan

I realised that I need to set really strong goals in order to commit to achieving them.  My weight loss goals in 2011 were obvious and very measurable.  Now that I have lost the weight, it's harder to define what better version of me I want to create.

I committed to have a DEXA Scan before and after Round 2 2012 to find out my exact body composition in order to set realistic measurable goals and then assess them via another DEXA scan after 12 weeks.

I have just had my first scan.  What an interesting experience!  Below is my stats summary.

Height 155.8cm...
Weight 65.8kg...

Scan Results of Body Weight Breakdown:
Bone Weight 2.026kg...
Fat Weight 15.712kg...
Lean Weight 48.283kg...
Total Weight 66.021kg...

Percentage Body Fat 23.80%...
BMI 27.1...
Daily Calorie Requirement 1588cals...

This video takes you through what it all means.

12 months of Yuk to Yay to What the…?

52 weeks of weigh ins and here I am!  Squee!!!
48kg lighter, clothes size dropped from 24 to 10-12, I'm a whole lot more confident, a mentor to others, and for the first time ever I am loving my life.  I am amazed at what has come my way beyond weight loss.  I just wanted to lose weight and be normal.
As I sit here, 52 weeks into my new lifestyle, I reflect on the ups and downs of the last year.

The penny dropped with Crunch Time
I read my sister's Michelle Bridges Crunch Time book during our 2.5 week Christmas 2010 family theme park vacation on the Gold Coast.  The theory was simple, you ate normal food and exercised.  We spent 11 out of 17 days at theme parks and I had a blast!  However, at 110kg they tired me out every day.  Time to make a change.

Weight Watchers didn't suit me
I was lucky enough to be selected to participate in the 14-week Weight Watchers at Work Program in February 2011.  I need regular accountability so the weekly weigh ins suited me perfectly.  However I  didn't believe in the principles.  A banana has "zero points". No, the fact is a banana has 100 calories.  After three weeks I swapped to following the Crunch Time book principles of 1200 calories in and 500 calories out but kept weighing in at Weight Watchers at Work for accountability.  I lost 16.8kg in 14 weeks.  At Week 14 the WW consultant said to me "You're my biggest success and you're not even following my program!".  I speak the language of science and facts so Crunch Time made so much more sense to me and it suited me.

Met Mish for the first time
I attend Filex each year as part of my job.   It's a health and fitness convention weekend in Sydney.   In 2011 I attended Mish's Filex presentation, had a chat to her and had my photo taken with her.  She didn't know me and I wasn't even a 12WBT program member then but she had all the time in the world for me and was so encouraging.  The Michelle Bridges Empire blew me away.  What a woman, what an empire!

Inspired at Round 1 2011 Finale in Melbourne
My sister participated in 12WBT Round 1 2011 while I was weighing in at WW.  She lost 15% of her bodyweight and loved the 12WBT program!  I attended the Melbourne finale party as her guest.  She was so excited to meet Mish and have her photo taken with her.  There was so much achievement, success, happiness and confidence in that huge room at Silk Road and I wanted it.  After the amazing presentations to the top transformers and watching the wonderful video, I turned to my sister and said "I want what they have, I can do this.  I'm going to lose 20% of my body weight in Round 2".  I made the commitment there and then to my sister.  No turning back.

A life-changing 12 weeks
I continued living the Crunch Time lifestyle and a whole world of resources became available by joining the 12WBT program.  A super-supportive online medium that is a one-stop shop for how to live a healthy and active lifestyle.  I had a goal to lose 20% of my bodyweight in 12 weeks (18.6 kilos).  I was on a dream run of weight loss and then I got sick for two weeks and couldn't train.  But I didn't give up.  I controlled my controllable and got back into training once I got over the flu.

Back on track and it just seemed too easy.  When was this dream run going to end?  I didn't want it to end and needed something else to keep me on track.  I started my blog in June so that if anyone happened to come across it, I did not want them to read that I put on weight.  I posted my weekly weigh in results as well as other things about my journey.

The dream run was continuing and again, I was worried it would suddenly end.  So I started my Mini Comp Round 2 with 13 women.  They emailed me their weight loss each week as well as a summary of their week.  We became our own little support crew and it was perfect.  These people opened up their lives to me and I learnt so much from them.  I am forever grateful.

Week 11 weigh in and I was just 1.7 kilos off my goal for the 12 weeks.  I had a red flag day in Week 12 where I took my own food as NOTHING was going to get in the way of me and my goal.  Week 12 weigh in was perfect, a 1.7 kilo loss which totalled a 20.04% weight loss for the 12 weeks - goal achieved!  I was so excited and I just kept on living the lifestyle between rounds 2 and 3.  I had no urge to binge or stray from the program which was great.
Round 2 2011 Finale Workout and Party Brisbane
I blogged my whole trip to Brisbane for finale with my sister in August.  Let's just say that nothing can prepare you for an honour like what I received.

Round 3 2011 Lean and Strong went so Wrong
I was on top of the world.  I felt amazing, my body was doing amazing things, my mind was set to conquer the world and I was training for my first fun run while getting the muscle definition I always wanted.  My 12 week plan crumbled at Week 4 and this is how.

Round 3 2011 Finale Party Sydney
My sister, cousin and I flew into Sydney for a long weekend and to party with Mish.  Illness stopped me from attending the workout but nothing was going to stop me from attending the party.
Walking up the stairs to the hairdresser I crossed paths with 2 ladies coming down the stairs.  One said "You're Splasharama!".  I looked up, smiled  and said "Yeah".  She then said "Everyone is talking about you!"  I was so embarrassed that I put my head down and just kept walking up the stairs!  How rude of me!
I sat down with the hair dresser and told him I need to look fabulous because everyone is apparently talking about me.  He thought I was funny but BOY did he make me look fabulous.  We had so many laughs while getting my hair done.

Eating Clean, No Training To Be Seen
Basically no real training took place from October 2011 to February 2012.  I did a few light exercises at home in January but that was pretty much it.  Eating clean maintained my weight while I was unable to train.  My muscle definition disappeared and my fitness dropped.  I never gave up though as I knew that sometime soon I would be back in tip top shape.

Fatigue is a Bitch
My Neurologist gave me the not so good news on 31 January 2012.  Apparently I was meant to be all better by now.  Instead he advised that I would suffer from extreme fatigue for the next six to twelve months.  I was also told to avoid overheating as that would result in instant extreme fatigue.  However, he advise to keep leading as normal life as possible and to train when my body is capable of it.  Wow, it wasn't the fantastic news I was after, but such is life.   Next MRI is in May… fingers crossed I'm on the mend!

Round 1 2012 Lean Body & Strong Mind
I got stuck into 12WBT Round 2 2012 Lean and Strong.  I decided to only do Monday to Friday's training sessions and leave out SSS and the weekday cardio components as aerobic activity makes me overheat really quickly.  I tried a step class and spent more time drinking water and standing in front of the fan than doing the super low impact version of each exercise.  It wasn't good for my mind so I haven't returned to it.   I did the Lean and Strong free-weights exercises in the well-ventilated areas of the gym so that cool air would brush past my skin and keep me cool.  From Week 9 I reduced the sets from 3 to 2 as the additional reps in the sets were making me too hot and I could not get through it all without overheating and exhausting myself.  I basically modified the program to suit my body, even though my mind wanted to do it all and more.

Twelve months later - Who am I now?
- I am normal sized and I don't stand out in a crowd.  I blend in and I love that.
- I am a strong minded person that choses to see the positives in all aspects of life and work.
- I am confident, fun and love the cheekiness that I now exude.  My real personality that was hidden for too long has finally come out to play.
- I am in control and put myself first.  All other aspects of my life have benefitted from me doing this, especially my work.
- I am a role model to my family and friends
- I am a mentor to people that are on their way to creating the best version of themselves.
- I am grateful for having my sister expose me to such an amazing and simple lifestyle.
- I am thankful to the Michelle Bridges Empire for putting together such a wonderful program that has now become my lifestyle.  A huge thank you to Mish, Bill, Amelia, Tim and everyone else that got the 12WBT program up and running.
- I am studying to be a personal trainer so I can help Mish make the world a fitter and healthier place.
- I am determined for my abs to pop out so I am back for Round 2 2012 Lean and Strong.
- I am Splasharama.

Comparing yourself to others can be a spirit killer

We all do it and we all need to stop.

Comparing yourself to others can be a spirit killer.  Admiring the achievements of others can be the boost you need to refocus and work a little bit harder.

Avoid comparing yourself to other 12WBT members and love YOU!

R1 2012 Week 8 Summary

Oops I forgot to post this Video summary I recorded in Week 8 on Good Friday.

It just covers how empowering the lean and strong program is for me and how 12WBT has taught me lessons that go way beyond losing weight.

If you're absent during my struggle, don't expect to be present during my success

12WBT 2012 Round 1 Week 10 is just around the corner.  If you are new to the program you may be nervous, anxious and excited all at the same time as only 3 weeks stands between you and the end of the first 12 weeks that changed your life.  If you are a returning member that has had previous success you may be determined and focused on smashing your goals in the next 3 weeks.  If you are a returning member that is a bit disappointed about your previous results you may be doubting yourself and hoping you can get back on track and achieve better results before the end of this program.

Regardless of your feelings, not everyone will support your new lifestyle.  The sooner you accept that, the easier your journey will be.

I had a great support crew in my family, close friends, my boss and mini comp teams rounds 2 & 3 2011.  I blogged about my support crew in July 2011.

However some people that saw me everyday had no interest in what I was doing, and that is totally ok.  YOU need to believe in yourself, it doesn't matter what others think of you... it really doesn't.

For example:
I LOVE Lady Gaga.  Her music, her lyrics, how she thinks, her interviews, her outfits, etc… they all excite me.  None of my friend or family like her.  Does that mean I have to stop liking her?? No Way! She's my number 1 iTunes playlist because she makes me feel great :). She is of interest to me and I really enjoy her music.  The opinions of others won't change that.

I never actually told the people that didn't show an interest in my new lifestyle about my achievements.  I never mentioned how far I can run, how much weight I lost, that I bought my first bikini, how much I can lift, that I bought my first pair of knee high boots, my 12WBT awards, etc...  I don't think they deserve to know.  They never showed an interest when i was training like a crazy woman, or eating carrot sticks while they ate party pies.  They never encouraged me so why share my achievements with them?  I don't get any joy sharing my successes with them.  Only the people that genuinely care about me got to share in my successes and that was mutually rewarding.

So when someone that have never shown an interest in your new lifestyle, or has criticised you, comes up to congratulate you on your achievements, how genuine can they really be?  Do they actually deserve to share your joys?  Hmmm... it's just something to think about.

The classic comment I received was from a lady at work that had never spoken to me in the 2 years I had worked there.  I had lost about 40kg at the time and she came up to me and said "Have you stopped losing weight yet?!". I wanted to slap her.  Instead I graciously said "yes I'm happy with my size now".  And she replied "Good, you wouldn't want to lose anymore".  I wanted to slap her again but instead I smiled :). This person knows nothing about me and had never spoken to me.  Now, if I pass her in the corridor and she looks me up and down, I just smile.  Maybe she is jealous?  Maybe she doesn't like me?  Maybe it's all in my head?!?!  In the end I don't actually care as it is not my problem :)

Oh and I have recently been told that a couple of people at work feel uncomfortable around me since I lost weight, however I don't know the exact reason why.  At first I cried as i don't want ANYONE to feel uncomfortable around me.  Then I started thinking that this could do my head in as I used to analyse EVERYTHING.  So I took a step back and calmed down.  I am the best version of me ever.  I don't share my active and healthy lifestyle with any of them.  I don't comment on the food they eat.  I don't call them lazy or judge them at all.  I rarely talk to them unless it's work related.  So I have decided to just let that one go as their insecurity is not my problem.  If they give me some facts regarding what I do that makes them uncomfortable I am more than willing to address them.  Until then I will continue being me :)

If you are the best version of you and you are happy, share it with those that you love as it may give you all that warm fuzzy feeling inside :)  There will always be haters and they are not your problem.

It's been a month between posts and I am finally back.  Thanks for reading :)
